Matt Stuart’s Whimsical Street Photography

05nose2londonwall01

Matt Stuart is a photographer who captures comical coincidences on the streets of London. He exposes some of photography’s least apparent attributes–editing, photographer’s intention, camera positioning–in his photos, and in doing so chips away at a photo’s documentary status. Errol Morris would be proud.

Save the Whales:the Ady Gil

KVNCSY Temps

sea-shepherd2“Japan kills about 1,200 whales a year in Antarctica under what it says is a scientific program allowed by the International Whaling Commission, despite a moratorium on commercial whaling. Critics say the program is a front for illegal whaling, and Sea Shepherd sends ships to Antarctica each season to try to stop the hunt.” —From NPR.com

“In an unprovoked attack captured on film, the Japanese security ship Shonan Maru No. 2 deliberately rammed and caused catastrophic damage to the Sea Shepherd trimaran Ady Gil.

The Ady Gil is believed to be sinking and chances of salvage are very grim.” —From SeaShepard.org

New Stamp Schedule for 2010

calvin-and-hobbes-USPS-stampFrom Doobybrain:

Last week, the USPS unveiled their 2010 stamp program to the masses and included in the collection was a set of Sunday Funnies that showed Calvin and Hobbes in their signature goof-off poses. If you want to get your hands on some, you’ll have to wait until this coming summer.

H&FJ:Vitesse

vitesse-blog-artwork-1-bh

A new font family from my favorite type designers Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones was released today. They made Gotham, Obama’s campaign font.

H&FJ is delighted to introduce Vitesse®, a new slab serif in twelve styles.
Slab serifs are one of typography’s most vibrant categories, yet they remain dominated by two ancient forms: the nineteenth century Antique, and the twentieth century Geometric. Both are vital and living genres—we’ve explored each of them, in our Sentinel and Archer type families—but what of the twenty-first century slab? Vitesse revels in the tension between organic letterforms and mechanical grids, and offers designers a distinctive new voice that’s suave, confident, and stylish. Engineered for responsive handling and a sporty ride.

The Books in 2010

The Books

From Matt Brehe’s tumble blog:

#1 most anticipated album of 2010: the promised upcoming release by The Books.  I saw them live a few weeks ago in Seattle and they mentioned an upcoming release and played a couple of songs off of it.  They were all very good, maybe not as good as the stuff on their previous album from back in 2005 Lost and Safe, but still totally solid.
And in case you haven’t heard The Books, the above clip is one of my favorite tracks from Lost and Safe called Smells Like Content.
