White Lizards Evolve in New Mexico Dunes

Erica Bree Rosenblum’s focus has been on three lizard species that elsewhere are dark skinned but in White Sands have each evolved a white-skinned variety that makes them hard to find. “It’s really obvious what’s happened,” Dr. Rosenblum said. “Everybody got white so that they could better escape from their predators.” It’s a great example of convergent evolution, of species independently acquiring the same traits.

Hark, a Vagrant: History, Lit, Cats

Kate Beaton is a Canadian cartoonist who posts great hand drawn comics on her blog Hark, a Vagrant. The subject ranges from autobiography to American history and literary figures, but there is quite a bit of genre-bending.

Via Kitsune Noir:

Kayce Lomas created this awesome little alphabet made up of random textures that correspond to the letter. So as you can see in the top image The A is a sea anemone, the B is Barnacles, the C is clouds and the D is diamonds. This isn’t a new idea but it’s a well-executed one and I think she did a great job of giving these letters a lot of character. I really love the N, which I think is a nest, and the Q which I think is made of quartz.

The martinis my dad made for us at Christmas were inspired by a recipe he heard on NPR. For the curious, here it is

  • 1 ounce fresh-squeezed ginger juice
  • 1 ounce triple sec
  • 3 ounces Grey Goose vodka
  • 1 ounce pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce Rose’s lime juice
