Cities By Rail

After being overwhelmed by the tight weave of the Paris Metro system, I dug in a little and found this great comparison of major world city’s rail systems mapped to the same scale.

Here are Chicago and Paris mapped in a way that makes me feel a little better. Living in Chicago I’ve gotten used to fewer lines covering a wider area, where the Paris system is complex, it’s more dense.

In just a few days now I’ll take the RER to Chatelet les Halles, transfer to the 11 (Brown) and take it to the Pyrenees stop. Which is not so bad! After all, I know my way around the Brown line already.

La Blogotheque

Chris’ brother Mike told us about this great series of music videos produced by a French music blog called La Blogotheque. They produce wonderfully casual videos like this one of Andrew Bird walking through Montmartre.

You might have to sit through a 15 second long commercial to see the embedded video. Here’s a link if you don’t want to wait.

Unreasonably Good Donuts

Sara guided us to the waterfront yesterday afternoon to visit Williamsburg’s weekly flea market-style food fair Smorgasburg. There were lots of tempting food stands, each one filling a very specific gourmet niche.  Out of all there was to offer we sampled mole tempeh tamales and smooth Basque gazpacho from Txikito, but the best in show were the killer donuts from DOUGH, a donut only bakery on Fanklin Avenue.

We ordered one cafe au lait, one toasted coconut, and one candied blood orange for us grown ups and Bannack got a dollar’s worth of cinnamon sugar donut holes. I’m going back because we still have to try lemon glazed poppy seed, hibiscus, or passion fruit with chocolate nibs.

The cupcake revolution is over, long live the donut.

Taleff O’Caseys Arrive

Sara, Chris and Bannack made it to New York and have been posting photos again. Here they are enjoying a cone from Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory after a bike ride through the neighborhood. Looks like they’ll fit right in!

Taleff O’Caseys on the Move

Sara, Chris, Bannack, and June the Moon arrived safe and sound in Illinois after three days worth of road tripping. We’re happy to have them for the next few days before they continue on their way to the Big Apple.

Their first stop was the Krizek’s out in Downer’s Grove and I couldn’t help but make the quick trip out here to greet them. We had a nice night around the dinner table chatting and anticipating the big pot luck Aunt Col is hosting Wednesday afternoon. We stayed up late with Rosie hearing stories about family, travel and dogs. Including a new one about my Grampa’s mean tempered, liver eating, half mutt Chihuahua, Rusty. I can’t believe I’d never heard that one before!
