I spent an afternoon in Amsterdam before heading back to Firenze for the start of the second term. It started out to be a long walk around the canal path the tour boat takes you on but by two o’clock it was pouring rain. I scrambled back to the train station ducking under awnings and dashing over the low bridges everywhere.
The red light district took me by surprise. One low retail window opened onto the pink powder room of a woman on the early shift, brushing her hair while looking in the mirror. I passed by a few of the famous aromatic coffee shops too, it seems like there’s one on every street corner.
It’s a beautiful city, but I was exhausted from not sleeping on the flight over and got rained out anyway so I go back to be airport with a few hours to spare.

I am so glad you took the opportunity to go sight seeing! Amsterdam is on my list of places to visit someday.
Looking forward to more posts!!
I love Amsterdam. It is a beautiful city with the best Greek restaurant I’ve ever eaten at. Also the best pizza, and the best frites, ohhhhhhh the frites! Many a late nights after a coffee shop were spent at the frites stands with their many sauces…plus most are open 24 hrs. a day!
What were you expecting from the red light district? It is a very interesting place. Sex workers with healthcare…nice.
I was surprised by the red light district not because I expected it to be anything but because I stumbled upon it!
You may be glad to hear that I DID get Belgian fries in a paper cone and a big glop of mayo to go with. I’d like to eat more foods with a tiny two prong fork, they were really tasty.
Kev, Amsterdam was supposed to be one of my stops coming back from France to MT, but schedule got changed…bummer! I was looking forward to it. Glad to hear you get to see and be in the red light district. -hehe
